Musings of a Peculiar Virgin Islander

Welcome to my world: the vivid imagination, opinions and experiences of an odd twenty-something from St. Thomas, one the U.S. Virgin Islands, as I discuss the dynamics of life from my side of the Caribbean Sea. What makes me 'peculiar'? Besides 1 Peter 2:9 (KJV), keep reading and you'll find out soon enough. ;o) Of course, everything I say won't be restricted to this 4-island American territory but I think that fact will lend a delicious 'spice' to my musings. Enjoy!

"When the music hits you, you feel no pain"

Oh yeah? Well I'd bet this poor girl would call Bob Marley a stinkin', dutty liar! Strangely enough, I'm one of those people that just can't seem to keep still once I hear a catchy beat. It's uncanny--my mom and I would be walking through K-mart, and unconsciously to me, she would point out that I'm bouncing while pushing the cart. That happens to me all the time. Yet when Sean Paul put out the tune "Shake That Thing", I'm sure he never intended to literally make one of his fans convulse uncontrollably.

Such was the case a young lady [mentioned in the link above] until doctors had to perform major brain surgery to solve the problem. Musicogenic epilepsy, apparently was the culprit. This link may offer some background, but I'm still searching for a more reputable online resource to share--my being an aspiring librarian, and all. :o)

Besides my undergrad background in neuro, I was particularly moved by this situation because of my personal affinity for music. Being physically sickened by the very thing that brings joy to my soul would be a fate beyond any I could fathom. I honestly don't know what I would do. Probably faced with a similar situation as this woman, I'm sure I would have followed suit, though. The prospect of a life lived in fear of a single song, composition, rhythm... Nah. The surgery would be so worth it!
